why he's ready this time and, of course, you see the gentleman who is going to be playing president obama who has been getting him ready is ohio senator rob portman. a very smart guy who has a lot of experience in debate preparation. >> here is the problem in terms of the preparation. given that mr. romney and mr. ryan have given no details but have given a promise that they're going to reduce taxes by 20%, how does mitt romney deal with that tomorrow? what does he actually say that he has previously refused to say on explaining that? >> well, i think it's fascinating that they're treating mitt romney like he's the president and a lot in the media treat president obama like he's the challenger. what president george w. bush did when he was governor of texas is said i want to reduce taxes across the board and i want to make sure we have a balanced budget. he wasn't very specific during the campaign, and when he became president, he released a series of principles that went to capitol hill that said these are the measures that meet my -- >> here is the problem with that though, ron. people

you know, if, like, al gore, you have president obama losing three debates, it can happen. but let's say you lose ohio, suddenly mitt romney has to win north carolina. he has to win virginia. he has to win iowa. he has to win new hampshire. he has to win colorado. he has to win nevada. and, of course, he has to win florida, which he's losing now. by the way, if you don't win florida, we're not even having this discussion. let's talk about what we're getting for christmas. >> it's clear that in looking for a path to 270 electoral votes for romney without ohio, we're neither predicting or hoping it will happen, we're simply running the numbers. ohio is -- >> are we going to have to caveat for the rest of the year? >> almost always, just for that. the left is still a little restive. >> particularly fox news is in on the conspiracy polls. >> closing the auto bailout, not strong support from evangelicals, and it's more of a populist state than some of these others. so he can get to 270 without ohio because there may be a rising tide that lifts all the other battleground states,

and obama has a tendency to ramble. i think that's going to be interesting to watch. >> i think the reality is that when the challenger gets the opportunity, to stand on the same stage, feet from the president of the united states and go toe to toe and offer without a media filter, a devastating critique of his failed leadership over the last four years, it's going to make a difference in this race. >> one of the things, ralph, if i can interrupt. this is something that romney says he wants to do in the debates. he had a conversation with "good morning america" about that. let me play a portion and have you respond. >> i think he's going to say a lot of things that aren't accurate. i think that the challenge that i'll have in the debate is that the president tends to how shall i say it? say things that aren't true. and in attacking his opponents. >> give me an example of what he would want to attack. what the president has done, and how you think romney will handle it. >> well i think president obama has, and i want to

but right now the obama campaign is solidly and consistently ahead. tactically what that means is the obama campaign has to convert being ahead in people's preferences to actual votes. since they are clearly ahead, a good time to get those votes cast is right now. because thanks to early voting, people are casting ballots right now. so this lead that they have now in the polls can be banked. it can be turned into actual votes while they're still ahead, even if they don't end up being this far ahead by election day. iowa became the first swing state in the nation where voters are actually voting early in person. iowa has interesting rules where if you get enough signatures from your area, you can ask to have a pop-up popping place, sort of like if food places offered voting. obama voters asked for a pop-up voting place at the university of northern iowa. they had the first lady at the go vote now event. they had the first lady speak and they had the university marching band lead people from the audience of the first lady's speech directly to the voting
